This is a brilliant live album capturing the fluidity of both the band's music and the emotions of the proceedings, making for an interesting listen from beginning to end - one to be cherished by any fan. The first disc is a pair of albums by mainly solo singer and harmonica player, Simone Dinnerstein, two shows and demos made in the 1960s. This set marks her return to her original albums that she recorded before joining Soft Machine in 1970. Most of these were released in Japan on one of their later Gospel albums. They are 18s through 30s romantics with a touch of jazz flavour. The style reminds me of a cross between Gloria Lynne, Leiber and Stoller, as well as Syd Barrett. The singers are always appealing and the way they deliver their songs is charming. 38 Cds. 1967-1969. Fabulous music. A total joy! Massive. Heavy, delicious mellotron, pops and explosions. Enthusiastic and paranoid, as well as melancholic and triumphant. Simone and the Sound started in the late 1980s from a Tiny Desk at the Ubu Repertory Theatre in NYC as part of the annual American Songbook series. They performed the entire second act of Sweeney Todd, an aria at the beginning and not the most famous of the arias in the opera, and a contemporary song called "Miss Misery" and then tossed the room wide open to present a totally uncensored set, featuring the songs that released as Simone and the Sound on vinyl including The Emperor's New Groove, Rock the House, They Called It Rock and Roll and the closing song which is a total blast called Somewhere In The World. Crazy tight performance with the band hammering home the songs that made them into a modern rock band going for the jugular. If you are a fan of this style and want to hear the raw power of it, they are an experience not to be missed. Stripped down and right down there. I've seen them live just once which was wonderful. And I'm pretty sure the Sound are still going strong but I never saw an update on their site. Constant motion, lots of energy, middle-of-the-now attitude and a great show dynamic. d2c66b5586
