Lost Best Buy Gift Card

Some states, like Delaware and New York, have passed laws that entitle the state to unclaimed property, including gift card money. But by and large, the corporations who issue the cards still get to keep most unused gift card funds.

The good news is that there is now an entire ecosystem of sites where gift cards can be exchanged for cash at anywhere from 60% to 90% of the value of the card. In a matter of minutes, a $50 gift card can be converted into $40 of legal tender.

Sorry, no. Whole Foods Market gift cards cannot be used for online purchases including catering and meals on wholefoodsmarket.com or grocery delivery through Amazon.com and other third-party partners.

A U.S gift card can be redeemed at any Whole Foods Market location in Canada and vice versa. However, U.S or Canadian gift cards cannot be used in the UK, and UK gift cards cannot be used in North America. At this time, Canadian gift cards are only sold in store and not online.

Best Buy's French told Computerworld in the statement that as part of the company's attempt to resolve the problem, "this customer was offered and collected $1,110.35," along with a $500 gift card "for her inconvenience."

Campbell said she initially asked for $2,100 in compensation and for the store to launch an investigation into what happened to her computer, but her request was ignored. Later, someone from Best Buy's customer-service department allegedly left her a message saying they were willing to give her a Best Buy gift card for $900 -- $750 for the computer and $150 for the lost content.

"I was just incredulous that they would offer that amount and that they would only offer it in a gift card, which would force me to go back to their store to buy another computer," said Campbell. "Maybe I was naïve to think that I should be able to take my computer to a national store like Best Buy and not have to worry about its safety and the safety of its contents. I was wrong."

As for the gift card, Campbell said she had repeatedly told Best Buy that it was not acceptable. "In fact, I had repeatedly told Best Buy that I did not want a gift card that would force me to continue to patronize their company," she said, adding that she donated it to a nonprofit organization.

Just last week, I was at Chipotle frantically digging through my wallet looking for my gift card. I knew it was somewhere in my pile of plastic, but couldn't find it for the life of me. In the end, my "free" burrito ended up costing me cash, as my gift card was permanently misplaced.

Stores and restaurants absolutely love gift cards because of unorganized people like me. But with a few simple steps, you can easily protect those valuable gift card balances in the event you lose or misplace one.

This is clearly the most obvious, yet overlooked, step to protect yourself. It's often overlooked because the gift card giver doesn't always include the receipt with the card. But if they do, or if you bought the gift card yourself, then by all means stash the receipt someplace safe. In the event you lose the card, you can simply call the retailer or restaurant customer service line and they can access your account balance via the activation receipt. They'll then easily re-issue you a new card.

If you don't have a receipt, then you can just put pen to paper and copy down the gift card numbers for safe keeping. While this can seem a tedious exercise for a measly $5 Starbucks gift card, you'll be glad you did if you lose a $100 Best Buy card.

Perhaps the most convenient and fool-proof way of protecting your gift card balances is using a virtual wallet like Google Wallet. You simply download the app to your smartphone (Android or iPhone), enter the card number, balance, snap a picture of the card (front and back) and the app takes care of the rest. You simply present the app when checking out, the cashier scans the corresponding barcode on your phone, and your balance is automatically reduced.

If you're just not tech savvy and the idea of adding a gift card to a virtual wallet gives you a headache, I have an easy solution for you. Just use your smartphone or camera to snap a picture of the gift card numbers when you get the card. This is an easy way to access your gift card if you end up losing it.

If you failed to keep the receipt and/or the gift card number was never recorded, but you used the lost gift card at least once online, you may still have recourse. Your card information may have been recorded when shopping online from the retailer's website. Whether or not your gift card info was saved varies by retailer, but when you are desperate to recapture your account balance, it's worth a shot.

Many retailers and restaurants allow you to actually register your card with them online. Some of the more popular include Crate & Barrel, Starbucks, and Tully's Coffee. By doing so, you get balance protection and a quick replacement card in the event you lose yours. Also, you can often use your gift card for rewards and earn free treats and reward points. The Starbucks gift card is famous for this.

By treating gift cards like cash (which they essentially are), you'll be more proactive when it comes to protecting their balances. By doing just a little bit of work to protect yourself, you'll never be stuck buying a burrito again after you were sure it would be free. Or is that just my story?

A US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) data spotlight has found that people in the US lost $148 million to gift-card-related scams in the first nine months of 2021. The spotlight also found that median reported losses from these scams increased from $700 to $1,000 throughout the same period.

It happens for many reasons: IRS and Social Security impersonation scams. Scams where someone pretends to be a grandchild or other family member or friend in need. Tech support scams. Romance scams. An email from someone pretending to be your boss or minister who needs you to buy gift cards.

But the demand for gift cards continues to build, enough so that the AARP has launched a special campaign designed to crack down on Gift Card Payment Scams, including information at its web site, www.aarp.org/giftcards.

It's not enough to post signs that warn of potential gift card scams. Perhaps, she says, a video could be created to help store clerks understand the signs of a consumer under stress who is under the scammer's ether.

Sometimes, scammers will convince consumers that the gift cards, like Google Play, Steam, or eBay, can be used as electronic vouchers to pay bills or taxes. Or maybe the phony story involves using the gift cards to cover costs before collecting a sweepstakes prize.

"If victims ask questions about why gift cards are being used for payment, scammers invent a plausible excuse, such as that the government has recently entered a contract with a gift card company to handle transactions," according to a Better Business Bureau alert.

Con artists can use the gift card numbers and codes to buy expensive merchandise to later resell or they could trade the card value for cash or cryptocurrency, according to an online alert from Kroger.

"In the case of Google Play and other online platforms, it is easy for the scammers to sell the gift card code in an online marketplace and disguise their stolen product among standard discounted gift cards," according to the Kroger alert.

The Better Business Bureau has proposed more education and consumer protection relating to gift card sales. One recommendation includes imposing a waiting period between when cards are purchased and when they can be used, at least for online purchases.

Many times, the scammers are pretending to be someone in authority. Nearly half of people who reported handing over money to someone posing as a government agency or official said they paid with a gift card, according to the FTC.

She needed to take money out of the bank and buy gift cards to fix her legal problems. As scammers played into her fears, she withdrew thousands of dollars from her bank account and used that money to buy numerous gift cards and Green Dot prepaid cards from several businesses.

Tony mostly asked her to put money on American Express gift cards, which she bought at several stores. She remembers seeing a warning at a cash register about gift cards being used in scams but she thought that Tony was a friend, not a stranger.

I go to best buy all the time. I have been building and repairing computers for at least 12 years now professionally and another 10 personnally. So that said I know what best buy can and cannot handle. When ever I work on someones computer I always let them know to back up their information first. If they do not then I tell them it will be lost and I will be willing to do it for them but I will have to charge them a hourly rate and they must put in writing everything that must be backed up and where it is on the computer.

It sucks that this lady lost her laptop. The reality is though, best buy easilty services a combined 10,000 computers a day between their stores and service centers. Mistakes are bound to happen and sometimes stuff gets lost.
